Mark Wetmore of Colorado is the only current coach to have won four NCAA titles at the same school.  In his 22nd year at Colorado and 19th as a head coach he has coached 228 all-American performances and 18 NCAA titles.  His teams have won five NCAA XC titles since 2000 (all between 2000 and 2006).  His success proved to others you could train and live consistently at altitude with kids from the states.  He looks fit and clearly is fit and has run every day for 30+ years.  It was thought it might be difficult for him to continue his success after Colorado joined the Pac-12 but it has had no effect and the Buffaloes have won the last three Pac-12 titles.  Without confirmation of using his sarcastic (and thoroughly funny) answers I had to shorten the interview to his serious answers.

Adam Schneider (AS) - Talk about the season - have you fullfilled or even exceeded your expectations? - also any surprises
Mark Wetmore (MW) - I think I am a little surprised at how well two of the freshman women are doing, Erin and Melanie. We knew they would be good, but they are a little ahead of what I allowed myself to hope for.

AS - You are moving to 10k - Do you feel the team is prepared (injuries or health potentially affect that) - especially the freshman Saarel?
MW - We are ready for 10k. I don't really see a big difference. Ben will do fine. I probably won't even tell him there is a difference.

AS - Tell me about how you feel coming into the Mountain Region - possible factors - recovery from a difficult Pac-12 meet, taking it easy a little to not have too many strenuous 10ks in a row,
MW - Well, it is a strong region. We can't really afford to be very satisfied. If we are careless or cavalier, we could end up watching the NCAA on TV and holding our PAC 12 trophies in our laps.

AS - Is the team healthy?
MW - You'll have a hard time getting a coach to be very truthful about that at this time of the year.

AS - Tell me how your freshmen are adjusting - particularly Ben Saarel and Erin Clark
MW - They seem to be adjusting well. Seamlessly it would seem.

AS - Do you feel you can knock of Oklahoma State - what will it take?  A better question may be, what does your team need to do to get its best performance at the NCAA meet?
MW - I guess anyone can beat anyone. For us to beat them we will need to prepare well over these final days, make no mistakes, stick to our own race plans.
